These are Pacific Banana Slugs handsculpted and handpainted by me in highfire stoneware clay. They come in two general sizes: regular size and Jumbo. They are all free sculpted so no two will ever look exactly alike. I pose them in various ways and when I glaze them I mix various underglazes to get variation in the color. Sometimes they are brighter yellow and sometimes they are closer to the greenish/yellow tone of the slugs of the far north. Sometimes I add subtle spots. Just like the variation seen in these slugs in real life - who's colors can vary based on their diet and environment. After I paint them with velvet underglaze, I coat them with a glossy clear glaze. I strive to sculpt and paint them to be realistic and scientifically accurate.
Pacific Banana Slugs (Ariolimax columbianus) are the largest and most common species of Banana slug. They are also the only species that are found outside of California - also living in Oregon, Washington and BC Canada. They live in the beautiful rainforest belt of the coastal Pacific Northwest.
Not that it particularly matters with these slug sculptures, but the clay and glazes I use are all food safe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe. So if your slug gets dirty you can wash it with your dishes, or you can use it as a decorative item with a food dish theoretically if you wanted. However, they are also durable high fire stoneware clay, so feel free to place them outdoors in your garden or anywhere else.
At check out, select the general size of the slug you want. Your slug will then be selected at random from what I have finished and ready to ship.
